Hatiora salicornioides

Reclaimed softwood

A Hatiora salicornioides (Dancing Bones Cactus) mounted on reclaimed softwood with sphagnum moss. An early prototype piece with rustic character. The segmented, coral-like stems branch in all directions, creating a living sculpture, and it has amazingly beautiful yellow flowers when it matures

A Brazilian epiphyte from the Atlantic Forest, where it hangs from tree branches in dense pendulous clusters. Hatiora salicornioides goes by two perfect common names: Drunkard's Dream and Dancing Bones. The segmented stems stack on top of each other like rows of tiny glass bottles, or like a chain of small bones balanced end to end. The species name "salicornioides" notes its resemblance to Salicornia, a salt-marsh succulent. A strange coincidence between a tree-dwelling cactus and a marine plant. In spring it tips each stem with a small bright yellow flower.

A cactus named after sea succulents that looks like green coral on your wall. Wait till it grows big and covers itself in beautiful yellow flowers hanging from your living room wall.
